Using Social Media
Social Media is something that has been a huge part of my life since high school. I could not wait until I became a freshmen in high school and could get my own Facebook account. As I look back on my experience, especially the feature - "On This Day" - I find myself mortified because of the things that I posted.
As one of my middle school students said, "Facebook is for old people." I would have to agree. I don't think many of the younger population is on Facebook much. It is more for millennials like myself who post things from time to time, in addition to Instagram. Facebook is a personal website where you can post things that interest you or big events that happened in your life. A personal example would be me posting a picture of my dog with this description, "First thing she does when I bring her in from being outside. Always has to be where I'm studying! #adventuresofkaiasaurusrex #specialk #sillypuppy." Also, it is a great way to connect with family and friends who do not live close. Facebook is something that is connected to all other social media sites, such as Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, etc. It is even required to have in order to play a game or be a part of an app. It's something that is universal for a lot of social media sites.
As for LinkedIn, this is a more professional site. It is focused on your job and the connections you make through that. I do have an account on LinkedIn, but I don't use it much. When it first came out, it was a way to become marketable for a job. However, I don't find that it does that very well. This social media platform is more focused on the business side of things.
I find that both platforms are important because companies look at all kinds of social media accounts. It's a huge factor when you apply for jobs. Before posting anything online, it is important to consider your audience, something I think that most young teenagers don't realize.
An example of a social media post comes from IUPUI's school of Informatics page, "Check out Informatics junior Yumna in the new IUPUI commercial! We are excited she is bringing attention to the fascinating and innovative technology our school has available." Facebook invites users to become involved in the school digitally. It's especially a way for online students to become involved in the community, even though they are far away.
